1 октября 1863 г. Во время гражданской войны в США в порт Сан-Франциско прибыла русская эскадра под командованием контр-адмирала А. А. Попова для демонстрации солидарности с Северными штатами Америки в их борьбе против рабовладельческого Юга, поддерживаемого Англией и Францией.
