29 ноября 1945 Вертолет R5, сконструированный И. Сикорским, провел первую в мире спасательную операцию. У берегов Коннектикута сильный шторм посадил на мель нефтяную баржу. Двух человек смыло в воду. Самостоятельно поднять их на борт команда не смогла. Тогда на помощь пришел экипаж вертолета, который вытащил из бушующего океана пострадавших.
