21 декабря 1978 г. спускаемый аппарат АМС “Венера-12” совершил мягкую посадку на поверхность Венеры. В течение 110 мин. с поверхности планеты передавалась научная информация. АМС “Венера-12” прошла над планетой на высоте 34000 км и продолжила полёт в космическом пространстве.
