24 декабря 1943 г. Войска 1-го Украинского фронта (генерал армии Н. Ф. Ватутин) начали Житомирско-Бердичевскую наступательную операцию. В ходе операции, завершившейся 14.01.1944 г. советские войска разгромили 6 дивизий противника из состава группы армий «Юг», почти полностью освободили Киевскую и Житомирскую области, часть территории Винницкой области.
