3 марта 1791 Конгресс утвердил создание Монетного двора США. Первое здание нового ведомства было возведено в Филадельфии. Первым директором монетного двора стал Дэйвид Риттенхауз (David Rittenhouse) – астроном, изобретатель, топограф и математик.
