5 апреля 1942 японская авиация нанесла бомбовый удар по городам Коломбо и Тринкомали на острове Цейлон (ныне Шри-Ланка). При этом японцы потопили к юго-западу от Цейлона британские крейсера HMS Cornwall и HMS Dorsetshire
