13 апреля 1918 В районе Вердена (Франция) морская пехота США ( 6th Marines ) впервые подверглась газовой атаке (немцы применили горчичный газ). 30 морпехов погибло, 314 было эвакуировано в тыл с отравлениями разной степени.
