4 июля 1863 армия Союза под командованием У.Гранта заняла после длительной осады город Виксбург -- последнюю крепость на реке Миссисипи под контролем Конфедерации. Территория Конфедеративных Государств оказалась разрезанной надвое. Вместе со сражением при Геттисбурге взятие Виксбурга означало "начало конца" войны между Севером и Югом

Siege of Vicksburg
The city of Vicksburg would not celebrate Independence Day for about eighty years as a result of the siege and surrender as well.
