27 августа 1776 в бою на Бруклинских высотах в Нью-Йорке английская армия генерала Вильяма Хоу разбила армию американских повстанцев Джорджа Вашингтона. Вашингтон с остатками своей армии сумел переправиться на остров Манхэттан.
