18 января 1778 Английский путешественник капитан Джеймс Кук стал первым европейцем, ступившим на землю Гавайских островов. Однако назвал он открытые земли Островами Сэндвича - в честь своего покровителя, Джона Монтегю четвертого Сэндвичского.
