I cant stand when people deny Elon Musk’s contribution to Tesla by claiming he isn’t truly a co-founder, attempting to paint him as irrelevant to the brand’s growth.
True, Tesla was founded in 2003 by Martin Eberhard and Marc Tarpenning. That much I’ll grant. What Musk haters don’t tell you, however, is that they never once succeeded in bringing a vehicle to market or posting a profit. EVER.
In 2004, when they were seeking $7 million in funding, Elon Musk invested $6 of that $7mil. That’s when Musk became Chairman of the Board of Directors.
In 2008, those original founders left the company and Elon became the company's CEO as well as its Product Architect. He promptly fired several key employees after determining they’d failed their performance reviews.
Then Tesla finally released its first vehicle, also in 2008. Tesla remained in the red until 2020, posting its first full-year profit of $721 million after years of costly research and development. By 2024, net income attributable to Tesla's common stockholders was nearly $12.6 billion, with Musk being the most successful entrepreneur in world history (largely due to Tesla and SpaceX).
Regardless of what your opinions are on electric vehicles, whether you hate or love Musk’s politics, and whether his political involvement will continue to degrade the value of Tesla’s stock, no one can argue that Musk didn’t build Tesla. Yes, on paper he wasn’t the founder. Two failed founders get to claim that mantle. Yes, they signed the legal documents which named the company. Big deal. Anyone can do that. It’s not a notable achievement to form a company on paper and deliver no vehicle or profits. What Musk built, however, was the successful version of Tesla that everyone knows today.
Much like the success of Mark Zuckerberg’s Facebook or Ray Kroc’s McDonald’s, it didn’t matter so much that they weren’t the originators of their company’s name or concept. What mattered was who successfully put ideas into action, made a tangible product with mass market appeal, and converted concepts into profits.
THAT’s what Musk founded. It was his money, his vision, his leadership, his product. Hate it or love, the version of Tesla which exists today was created by Musk.
