16 мая 1919 начался первый трансатлантический перелет (точнее самый длинный его отрезок Ньюфаунленд - Португалия). С Ньюфаунленда отправилась в полет летающая лодка NC-4 Curtiss (экипаж - 5 человек) под командованием Альберта Кушинга Рида (Albert Cushing "Putty" Read)
